Upon arrival in March, it turns out that Quinta do Arneiro is actually a working farm that runs a small food shop and an organic restaurant. We arrived for brunch, and the restaurant was filled with other patrons – all Portuguese.

A couple of weeks ago, Tom and I took a break from all the Port Wine Day goings-on in Porto and the Douro and headed south. We had been invited to join the vindimas—wine grape harvest—at Quinta do Gradil, in Cadaval, not far from Lisbon. There are countless opportunities to experience harvest season in Portugal, but this one seemed especially fitting.

For me, the best came last: a dessert of local Rocha pears (also the main ingredient in a marvelous jam often served with cheese and port wine), atop an eggy souffle.
Looking southward from the back of the winery out over the vines at Quinta do Gradil With roughly 200 hectares under vine, the quinta grows a total of 22 varieties of grapes, both red and white. The whites range from Portuguese varieties normally found in the area, such as Arinto and Fernãeste Pires, as well as Verdelho and Viosinho, to international varieties including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier.
Vieira bought Quinta do Gradil 16 years ago, and like many quintas within striking distance of Lisbon, it has a colorful history. The quinta belonged to the Marques por Pombal (famous for rebuilding Lisbon after the great earthquake of 1755), which he supposedly purchased for a mistress.

The Tannat spent 12 months in new French oak, creating medium to strong tannins. It was suggested to try with gambas caril (shrimp curry), and I can see that would be an interesting match.
Dinner starts with a Welcome Cocktail at 7:30pm, followed by dinner, served at 8pm in events room with panoramic views overlooking Porto and the Douro river.
